Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto Review

Haven’t You Heard?  I’m Sakamoto is a new anime being simulcast this spring on Crunchyroll.  I had never even heard of this series and wasn’t too interested in watching it until I decided out of boredom to try it out.  Sakamoto hits the WTF! Comedy/gag button for anime and its something that I rarely watch but in this case, the series hits all the right buttons.

The story is centered around the incredibly cool and popular Sakamoto, a genius who is well liked by both girls and boys. Despite the strange situations he may be in, Sakamoto always manages to fix the problem in absolute perfection while still being over the top.  The key to the series is not just having a strong MC but how it handles the side characters and their interactions with the main character. My favorite side characters are Sera, the male magazine street model that is for some reason is always in boxers trying to show his model skills but in reality, he has a really pudgy body and Maeda, a former delinquent that blows bubbles instead of smokes and has some sort of manly gay crush on Sakamoto.  Every time I see those two I end up having a good laugh which means that the artists and author have done a good job.

The art and animation are high quality with a distinct style that belongs to the series alone.  The only real complaint that I have is that being a comedy/gag anime each episode contains 2-3 shorts and doesn’t really contain a larger storyline, though they do make sure to show that time is moving along with characters Sakamoto has already interacted with showing up frequently to speak with him.
